Blogger jailed for defamation on MD Fidelity Bank

Oloketuyi was arraigned before a before a Federal High Court in Lagos for a story he wrote about the Managing Director of Fidelity Bank,Mr. Nnamdi Okonkwo. 39-year old Oloketuyi is standing trial for a 2-count charge that involves defamation. Oloketuyi’s story had claimed that the Okonkwo had an affair and had impregnated a staff in the bank, leading to the crash of his marriage. According to the prosecutor, Mr Olakanmi Omisope, Oloketuyi had intentionally published a story he knew was false in order to annoy and insult Okonkwo. Omisope said that the offences contravened Section 24 (1) (b) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition Prevention) Act, 2015, and Section 375 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap C38, Laws of the Federation. Oloketuyi had pleaded not guilty to all the charges, and has been remanded in jail until the first of September, when bail will be set. Section 24 (1) of the Cybercrime Act provides that any person who intentionally or knowingly sends a message which is grossly offensive or obscene and found to be false, by means of computer network, is liable on conviction to a fine of N7, 000 or three years imprisonment or both.
