MTN pays $251 million toward record 3.8 billion Nigeria phone penalty

MTN pays $251 million toward record 3.8 billion Nigeria phone penalty
24 Feb 2016 17:28 Loni Prinsloo Mobile phone company agreed to withdraw the case over the fine from the High Court in Lagos as part of efforts to reach a settlement MTN Group Ltd., Africa’s largest mobile-phone company, paid 50 billion naira ($251 million) toward a record $3.9 billion fine in Nigeria for missing a deadline to disconnect subscribers and will continue negotiations with the regulator. The payment to the Nigerian government was made “on the basis that this will be applied toward a settlement, where one is eventually, hopefully arrived at,” the Johannesburg-based company said in a statement on Wednesday. MTN also agreed to withdraw the matter from the High Court in Lagos as part of efforts to reach a settlement, the company said. “This is a most encouraging development,” MTN Nigeria Chief Executive Officer Ferdi Moolman said in an e-mailed statement. “It demonstrates a willingness and sincerity by both parties to work together toward a positive outcome.” MTN was hit with the penalty after failing to comply on time with an order to disconnect 5.1 million customers deemed by the regulator to be unregistered in Africa’s most populous country. Nigeria has sought to cut off service to some users as they fight crime and in a country with poor identity records. The insurgent group Boko Haram’s campaign to establish its version of Islamic law in Nigeria has left thousands of people dead since 2009. While the payment is about 6t% of the total fine, it’s still “a ton of money,”  Sasha Naryshkina, a director of Johannesburg-based money-manager Vestact, said by phone. The outlay represents about 27% of MTN’s annual earnings before interest, depreciation, taxes and amortization in Nigeria, the company’s biggest market, he said. MTN shares erased declines and rose as much 3.2% in Johannesburg, trading 1.7% higher at 130.09 rand as of 3:24 p.m. local time. The stock has declined 3%t since the fine, originally set at $5.2 billion before being reduced later to $3.9 billion, was made public on Oct. 26. Executive Chairman Phuthuma Nhleko is in Nigeria and continuing to lead the negotiations with the regulator, the company said. MTN is also in talks with the Nigerian Communications Commission over the lifting of sanctions imposed on the company for failing to meet phone-service quality standards. -Bloomberg

Nigeria’s Football Chief Coach Sunday Oliseh Resigns

Nigeria’s football chief coach Sunday Oliseh resigns segun February 26, 2016 African News, Nigerian News, Uncategorized Sunday Oliseh has resigned as the Head Coach of the Nigerian football national team, the Super Eagles, just over seven months after he was appointed. Oliseh, who announced his resignation on Twitter, said he took the decision due to the inability of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, to honour the terms of his contract. “Due to contract violations, lack of support, unpaid wages, benefits to my players, assistant coaches and myself, I resign as Super Eagles Chief Coach,” he tweeted. He thanked Nigerians for the opportunity of serving as the coach of the team in a preceding tweet before announcing his resignation. “I feel fortunate, blessed and eternally grateful for having the honour to play, captain and coach this great nation of ours, Nigeria.” Oliseh, whose appointment was made with much fanfare by the NFF, soon started having problems with the executives of the federation over remuneration, match tactics and results. His complaint about being owed was not well received by the NFF, which rather threatened to sanction him. He also had challenges managing the players. An altercation between the coach and the team’s former captain and the country’s most capped goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, led to the goalie’s premature resignation from the team last October. Apparently, the last straw for Oliseh was the woeful outing of the Super Eagles at the CHAN competition in Rwanda, where the team were eliminated in the first round. Following widespread criticisms that greeted the team’s elimination, a Youtube video soon surfaced in which Oliseh lambasted his critics, referring to them as “insane”. On Thursday, the NFF directed Oliseh to henceforth report to former coach and the NFF’s technical director, Amodu Shuaibu. The NFF is yet to respond to his resignation.

MARATHON PALAVER !

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 6TH AND MARATHON PALAVER It's an experience I wish to share with friends. The advert of the Lagos marathon colonised our TV stations for about a month and it never occurred to me that I was going to participate. Usually we've been advised to accommodate exercise and physical fitness into our living activities and I commenced jogging from Maryland to Ikeja Police college every Saturday morning since 2014 when I'm in town. My fitness team advised we join the 42KM marathon train so I registered. Little did I know that I'd just created trouble for myself. Eepa...haile Gebresellasie is a wicked man. He made MARATHON appear so easy. Woke up at 5am. Left for teslim balogun stadium at 5.30am. The entire ikorodu was cordonned off as well as most major roads in Lagos. We commenced the race at 7am as I appear so fit ( hmmn). From stadium- ojuelegba- fadeyi. It was a lovely experience, full of excitement, large roar of "keep moving", let's go. " Common", an atmosphere full of vigour, energy, mental alertness and will power filled everywhere. Passersby, by standers and well wishers chanting songs of support. A reminiscent of my endurance walk and camp activities during NYSC years back. At onipanu, we had the first casualty, a man passed out and my legs started shaking... Obanikoro- anthony, turn towards Gbagada,. each time we approached the refreshment stands, nothing was left and we just kept moving. At the foot of the 3rd mainland bridge I couldn't feel my legs anymore, I stopped jogging and started to trek. I could see mammoth heads in front and behind. Mobile ambulances were picking those who knocked out and BRT buses also picking tired legs. ( I never thought i'll work thru the entire 3rd mainland bridge in my life) guess what? I trekked it!!!, immediately after the ebute metta interception, I started seeing about 10 different 3rd mainland bridges..!!. a fellow marathoner put some glucose in my mouth and I could then see its just one 3rd mainland bridge. At the foot of the bridge so many runners sat on the floor, waiting for the next available BRT. I was almost joining them until a lady overtook me and I gasped.. A lady! No I must continue...We went thru Simpson bridge- Osbourne- Alfred rewane- Falomo. At Falomo I had swollen hands and feet. My toes were almost exploding out of my foot wear, finally I couldn't feel any part of my body till I started ascending the ikoyi- Lekki bridge which was 30KM. I couldn't hear anything again and suddenly I was looking at the clouds. Moments later I heard The word " O ti wa ok" inside a BRT bus!.I couldn't lift any part of my body. The bus took us to the finishing line at 42.1KM inside Atlantic city VI. I received my medal, certificate and light refreshments. At the finishing point, we were informed the winner a Kenyan, emerged at 9.30am while we got there at 12.30pm. BRT buses conveyed us to our various destinations and I walked home like a 99 years old. It was an eventful and fulfilling experience for me. I just woke up now for some aboniki treatment. Thanks. That's my story.... Yeeeeeeeeeee ese mi.

PDP Victory: Oyegun calls for probe of Supreme Court Judges

PDP Victory: Oyegun calls for probe of S-Court judges
– APC national chairman, John Oyegun, called for the investigation of Supreme Court judges over the handling of governorship petition. – He said that there is something fundamental wrong with the verdict – He also promised to arrange a meeting between the president and delegation of the Rivers APC  John Odigie-Oyegun, the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress has called for the investigation of Supreme Court judges. He made the call against the backdrop of his party’s loss of Rivers state governorship seat to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party. READ ALSO: PDP Bot set to select new national chairman The Supreme Court has last week affirmed the electoral victory of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state and dismissed the suit of the APC governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside who had urged the court to upturn the victory of the APC. The APC chief said this when he received a delegation of the party from the state led by Peterside where he expressed shock over the verdict of the Supreme Court saying: “something fundamentally wrong in the judiciary.” Commenting on the request of the delegation to meet with president Muhamamdu Buhari,Oyegun promised to arrange a meeting between the president and members of the Rivers APC to address the state of the party, Vanguard reports. He said: “The APC National leadership has not neglected party leaders and supporters in Rivers State. The state has always been in the front burner of discussion and decision in the party. There is obviously something fundamentally wrong in Rivers State which needs to be investigated and addressed. “Your visit has had a sober effect on me. This meeting will kickstart urgent actions to address what went wrong. As of today, there is an attempt being made by INEC to bar us from elections in Anambra and other states. We must address these issues. I still find the judgement  on the Rivers State governorship election totally astonishing. There is something fundamentally wrong in the judiciary. “We have lost very important resource-rich states to the PDP. No matter how crude oil prices have fallen, it is still the most important revenue earner for the country. “I will take up your request to facilitate a meeting with the President. We will do that as soon as possible and also make it clear that there are problems which as a party, we must address.”

Supreme Court affirms Ikpeazu, Emmanuel Winners of Abia, Akwa Ibom guber polls

Supreme Court affirms Ikpeazu, Emmanuel winners of Abia, Akwa Ibom guber polls The Supreme Court has upheld the elections of Gabriel Emmanuel and Okezie Victor Ikpeazu as duly elected governors of Abia and Akwa Ibom states, respectively. The apex court also yesterday, set aside the earlier judgment of the Appeal Court, which nullified the elections held on April 11, 2015. The sitting was presided by Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mahmood Mohammed alongside Justices Tanko Ibrahim Mohammed, Bode Rhodes-Vivor, Kudirat Kekerekun, Suleiman Galadima, Kumai Akaahs and Centus C. Nweze. Delivering the judgment after almost 12 hours of intense argument and counter-argument, Justice Centus Chima Nweze, said he affirmed the declaration of Udom Gabriel and Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, by the Independent National Electoral Commission  (INEC) as governors of Akwa Ibom and Abia states, respectively. While unanimously upholding the judgment of Justice Nweze, they all agreed to give reasons for their judgment on February 15, 2016
The Court of Appeal, sitting in Owerri, removed Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party as governor of Abia State on December 30, 2015. The court also declared Alex Otti of the All Progressives Grand Alliance the winner of the April 11 and April 25 supplementary elections in the state. Delivering judgment in an appeal filed by Mr. Otti, the five-member panel, headed by Justice Oyebisi Omoleye, said the APGA candidate scored 164, 444 valid votes to defeat Mr. Ikpeazu who scored 114, 444 votes. The court declared that Mr. Otti was the winner of the April 11 and April 25 supplementary elections in Abia. Justice Omoleye said the cancellation of the elections held in three LGAs of Obingwa, Osisioma Ngwa and Isiala Ngwa by the returning officers after the results were uploaded to INEC was wrong. Also the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on December 18, 2015 nullified the Akwa Ibom State governorship election of April 11, removing the declared winner, Udom Emmanuel, from office. Mr. Emmanuel’s election was challenged by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Umana Umana. At the election tribunal, Mr. Emmanuel of the Peoples Democratic Party, had secured partial victory, with the election cancelled only in 18 out of the state’s 31 local government areas.  The tribunal had ordered a rerun. Mr. Emmanuel had challenged the ruling, insisting he won in all 31 LGAs. The APC candidate, Mr. Umana, also appealed against the ruling, seeking a total nullification of the election. A five-man panel at the Court of Appeal on Thursday December 18, 2015 dismissed Emmanuel’s argument, and cancelled the entire election. - See more at: http://www.nigeriabar.com/2016/02/supreme-court-affirms-ikpeazu-emmanuel-winners-of-abia-akwa-ibom-guber-polls#.

AN ENCOUNTER WITH A 419NER!

AN ENCOUNTER WITH A 419NER Exactly two weeks ago, a lady dressed as a Custom Officer on her Facebook wall, sent me a friend's request. Seeing her age and rank, I accepted. Thirty minutes after we became Facebook friends, she sent me a message on both my wall and inbox that The Nigerian Customs was selling impounded cars at cheap and affordable prices. I immediately knew that the lady was not for real. Typical of me, I would have deleted her from my friends list, but I deliberately opted to humor her by playing along. I called the number she sent in her advert, and it was a man who picked. I told him I wanted to talk to Femmy Juliana but he said she was his boss blah blah....and that he was her PA. He said I could do business with him as he represented his "madam". I told him I was interested in the Murano which was listed for N500,000 and that I needed to know how and when to pay for the car. And of course, where I could pick my car! He told me that I had to pay first. He explained that after I'd paid, Madam would then finish all the processes involved at the Nigeria Customs headquarters for me because "she is an insider." He reiterated that if I come in myself, I won't even be considered. I feigned agreement to his suggestion. Next he told me he would send a bank account number for the payment while calmly reminding me to keep safe the Bank Teller as my proof of payment. I said I understood. 24 hours later, I was yet to pay money into his account. (Perish the thought! I don't have that kind money in any of my accounts.) He started calling me and I kept ignoring his calls. Within an hour, he had called me 47 times and I knew he was "killing" my phone battery. So I picked his call and calmly told him that my bank had blocked my account (because of BVN) and I needed to deposit N25,000 before I could access "my over N2.5million in that account." He urged to get the money quickly or "Madam may change her mind and give the Murano car to somebody else." I told him, in desperate tones, that I don't want to lose the car and I was doing my best to get a loan of N25,000 in order to access my account. Two hours later, he called to know how far I had gone in my quest. I told him I was still stuck. Then, I casually begged him to loan me the N25,000 after which I would now back N30,000 to him plus the cost of the Murano (that is N530,000). Grudgingly, he agreed. I thanked him like my life depended on it. Then I sent him an empty account I seldom use. Within an hour, I got an alert for N25,000 paid into my account from him. I have caught the "mugu". He called to inform me that he'd paid in the money and I should go get it and activate my account. With a wicked smirk on my lips, I told him that I was grateful for the gift of the money and he could go to hell. He started shouting and I hung the phone on him. He kept calling and I sent him this text: My name is Davidson Rotshak Lar, am a Police Officer. I work in Kebbi State Police Command Hqts. My office is on the first floor of the State CIID building. Come and get your money here, Mr. 419ner. I only got my own share of those you had scammed." I haven't heard from him since. His phone number is unreachable. We are now trying to use the Bank Account number he gave me to see if we could arrest him through the address he supplied. I now appreciate why banks are so meticulous when you go to open account. But am richer by N25,000 I SAW THIS STORY AND HAD TO COPY IT AND PASTE HERE FOR YOU TO READ, I KNOW YOU LIKE IT... BE WISE, DON’T BE CONNED!
